Memorial Day
Caden on his first ride by himself
Memorial Day weekend has always been something to look forward to for us, but this weekend was extra special and extra fun. Saturday started off with great weather an no other plans but to work in our garden/yard. With Caden playing in his sandbox, me finishing a long battle with the sprinkler system and Katy and Shae (THANKS SHAE!) planting new seeds and prepping new garden boxes, we got a lot done. It is looking like we will have another great year of produce. That evening we went to a BBQ with some co-workers of mine, lots of fun, until the thunder rolled in and the skies opened and it rained like I have never seen before...it was still fun.
Sunday morning, the rains subsided and another nice day was awaiting us. I started out by going to my morning triathlon swimming class, Katy and Caden a walk with Anne. That afternoon we headed into Boulder for the Boulder Creek Festival. Foods, crafts, games, trucks, toys, and lots of other sights to see. We walked in to the festivities with Caden kicking it in his stroller and enjoyed pizza, Indian wraps, tons of free sweets and lots of crafts. The highlight for Caden was when he got to ride the barrel train all by himself up and down the street. I won’t lie, that was a little trying for dad watching him disappear into the crowd all by himself, but he thought it was a blast. After touring a few more booths and picking up a couple more crafts, once again, the thunder rolled in, the skies parted, and it started to rain. We all made a mad 2 mile dash back to the car, mom and dad getting soaked, Caden, fast asleep in his stroller oblivious to anything else going on.
Then, there was Memorial Day. We squeezed more activity in this 18 hour day then the last week combined. It started off like every Memorial Day in Colorado should start, with the BolderBoulder 10K Road Race. Once again, good weather, great weather for a run. We got up at 6am to get ourselves ready and drop Caden off with Anne. Katy and I headed into the traffic that results from 60,000 people trying to get to the same place at the same time. Neither Katy or I were in our best running shape, but we had a good time nonetheless. We all met (me, Katy, John, Beth, Kendra, Shae, Kristen, Tyler, Nick) at the end of the race in the CU stadium to enjoy the Memorial Day ceremonies: 21 gun salute, Taps, Military Color Guard, Sky-Divers, and military jet fly-over. All this just in time for, once again, the thunder to roll in, the skies to open, and, for the third time, get stuck outside in the rain. We all walked back ~2 miles to the car and, drenched from head-to-toe and crammed into a car with 15 others, went to Lori’s (Tyler’s sister) for the annual Memorial Day BBQ. We met up with Caden there and enjoyed the families company with good food.
Next, it was home for recovery (hot tub, shower, nap). We got the spa done, but Caden had other plans for nap time. Spent the next couple of hours playing with the little man and doing odd items around the house before the next big event…can you say Playoffs?! I managed to score 4 playoff tickets to Game 4 of the Nuggets v Lakers Western Conference Finals (that is Basketball to all of you who could care less). So we dropped off Caden again (poor kid got handed around a bunch today), with Kristen, Kendra and Shae, and took Nick and Tyler to the big game in Denver. It was awesome. Until now, Denver had trailed LA 2-1 in the series after a disappointing loss at home. But not anymore, after an amazing game with too much screaming and too much beer, the series is all tied up. We all had a great time.
And, for the last time, on our way out, the thunder rolled in, the skies parted, and it rained.
Awesome weekend.
It never really occurred to me, but I don’t think you can have a proper festival without a really big fire truck. And I never cared until Caden came along...now they are the coolest things ever!
Caden is actually watching Gaelic dancers perform...good music to clap to!
