Obama For President!

November 4, 20082 photos

It has been an exciting (and entirely too long) election season. But never have we been so passionate or so involved as we were this year. Katy predicted an Obama win four years ago, before any of us knew the name. And we did our best to make sure he became the next president. Katy spent hours on the phone calling people in our local community and in communities across the nation. We even spent a few days going door to door spreading the word. We can feel proud about our involvement. It was this kind of grassroots movement that gave Obama the big win.

It has been a long time (read: 8 years) since we can say we were proud to be Americans. Never (okay, in our lifetime) has our country been so mistrusted in the world, so divided here at home, and in such dire economic conditions. The blame belongs to many, though we like to focus on a certain administration that rhymes with tush, and the work needed to bring us back to a great country belongs to us all.

We are hopeful that an Obama administration will set us on the right path. It may be foolish to believe that he will be able to fix all our troubles and maybe even foolishly optimistic to believe he can do even half of the things he said during his campaign. But we believe he wants to do good, and has the judgement and passion to do it. Many say he lacks experience, that is silly. What good has experience brought us so far? Many say he is a Socialist, look it up in a dictionary! Using the taxes of all the citizens to help those in our society that need help is not redistribution of wealth or a lean to socialism, it is just good human decency. Sadly, so many people are so focused on their own money and own life that they forget we are society for the people and by the people. We are not self-serving and we are not greedy. We help those who cannot help themselves and we do so graciously. Believe it or not, right now the taxes we pay to government programs is the best system we have to uphold those values. Is it a perfect or even good system? No, but it is all we got. And we need to put people in office who make that system better.

The highest office of this country has been run by the self-serving for too long. A $1o,000,000,000,000 (count the zeros!) debt, two wars, and the middle class standing in soup kitchen lines is all the evidence you need for that. What we need now is someone who can rally the people. Who can start at the bottom and better everyone’s lives on the way up. Someone who can start with a phone call and an email and move a nation to a better day. Perhaps, a community organizer to those of you who believe that is an unworthy position of a president.

If Bush taught us anything, it is that this is not what we want. That we can do better. That change, and I mean any change, is a good thing. We are near rock bottom and it is going to take years of repair before we are on our feet again. But now, with Obama taking the helm, we can stop holding our breath for the next self-imposed disaster to hit us and start looking forward to better days. OBAMA ’08!!!!
