The So-So Garden

August 17, 20131 photos

As our garden hits it stride, we realize we may have gotten a wee bit lazy over the years. We have had some of the usual success: Green beans are producing about 2-3 pounds per week, tomatoes are keeping us in the sauce and the tomatillos have caused to start using the slogan, “Salsa Verde. I put that sh*! on everything.” We have noticed that some of our usual practices have fizzled a bit. The usually plentiful squash garden out front just didn’t get going this year. A more initiated gardener would have practiced some crop rotation or, at the very least, fertilization to keep the bed hearty enough. The tomatoes, while plentiful, just seem a little unhealthy. We need to strip the garden down and put some new life in it this coming year. Some ideas include: New, higher, raised beds. New interesting crops. New locations for the same crops. And thanks to what is likely a very industrious squirrel, planting squash in the back yard grass (see below).
