Our Garden Grows
As many of you know Colorado had a very short and mild winter so in April we decided to take our chances and plant things early. And as gardens (or at least ours) tends to go it worked for some things and not for others. Turns out tomatoes don’t do well being planted early so we lost some plants but squash...um, they seemed to like it and are growing out of control.
This year we expanded and mulched our front yard squash mound. We have 17 mounds of squash of some nature. Some mounds didn’t come up as quick as other so we replanted and now have no idea what is where but now everything is growing well. We have an abundance of green zucchini...and on average are picking 3 per day. We also have some yellow squash, pattypan and crookneck squash coming in. On the vine still growing are LOTS of large pumpkins and some acorn and spaghetti squash. Sad to say not as many spaghetti squash as last year (we are still eating some from last year) but still some so that’s good.
In the backyard our tomatoes are doing fairly well. Molly is a tomato monger who doesn’t like to share much. She goes out and eats lots and lots of cherry and yellow pear tomatoes each day. I’m not sure we’ll have enough tomatoes this to make sauce with but we’ll see how it all goes--still early. However we do have an abundance of tomatillos so Jon is making lots of yummy salsa!
The green beans are also getting started and both kids love picking those...eating them is another story though...
