Bye-Bye Ball

November 13, 2009

8 years and 4 months ago, I (Jon) started my career at Ball Aerospace right out of college. It was an exciting company. I was not only fortunate to land the job because of the reputation that came with it, but that I got to call Boulder, Colorado my home. I had the great fortune of working with some of the smartest people in the business. I called my bosses friends and worked with the top of the industry creating amazing space technology. But, given all that, I still felt I needed to try something new. Ball wasn’t challenging me enough and I was bored.

Monday, I start my new job at Surrey Satellite US. It wasn’t my plan to go work for another aerospace company, but this group has some interesting ideas. First, I am the 9th employee, which means (I hope) I can have some say on how we do business and what practices we adopt. Second, the parent company is in the UK and I will have the opportunity to train there for a month or two. Third, unlike bigger companies (even Ball size), I will be a part of each mission from beginning to end as opposed to pieces here and there.

I don’t know if this will be better, but it was time for a change, and I am excited for the opportunity. Plus, Ball said they would take me back should it not work out!

Where I was and where I am going
