Birthday and Anniversary Weekend
As always, we wrapped up our March with Katy’s birthday and our anniversary. This was our 5th anniversary, so it seemed only fitting we should do something special. Back several months ago, I had grandiose plans of whisking Katy and I away for a romantic weekend in New York. I had enough miles for first class tickets, plans for a nice hotel and a few shows. Oh wait...kids, we have kids. No, that is fine. We have family, they will watch the kids for us. Oh, no wait...no one can breast feed Molly. That’s right, I remember now, we are tethered firmly to our house for the next several months. Okay, so no romantic weekend....but we are not the type to be held back. We will find time for ourselves. So the plan was to get as many blocks of baby-sitting as we could over a long weekend. And actually, it worked out pretty well...except:
1)I was sick. Got sick Tuesday before our celebrations. And not just a cold, or a flu. Actually I think I may have incubated a whole new type of virus. Severe body aches immune to even Percocet, stomach aches and headaches and just an overall need to sleep...all day. Weirdest thing ever, couldn’t eat. Didn’t want to eat. For like 5 days. Enough details, but it put a damper on things.
2)Katy broke her toe. Not in itself worthy of a blog post, but noteworthy as a collection of events that defined our “romantic” 5th anniversary.
3)Household items: Broken toilet. Okay so it has been broken for awhile, but what better day to fix it than our anniversary you know what I am saying? Fixed it okay, but shortly afterward the bathroom had a strong burning smell. Now I can’t deny that I have had my fair share of home project FUBARs, but there was no way me messing with a toilet could cause a fire...could it? No, completely unrelated the light fixture caught fire. Well the incandescent bulb started burning...I didn’t know that could happen. Let that be a warning to all our readers.
4)Then there was our night out. We went to sushi cause we love it...usually. Actually we got food poisoning this time. So we are done with sushi...for now. And no it wasn’t radioactive fish or even old fish...probably just bad mayo in some sauce. How do I know this? Cause this is the billionth time that I have got food poisoning from mayo. Mayo is good, but it is a bad idea.
5)After the sushi, but before the sickness, we went to Dave and Busters for a night of red-neck child-hood money wasting fun. It was a lot of fun actually. Except for the bloody nose part. You know those games where you throw footballs through “goals” to get points? Throw. Miss. Bounce Back. Nose.
6)Last, near disaster that evening. Of course since we had such a wonderful day together (and we really did have a great time), Molly decided to remind us that we are not, in-fact, without responsibilities. She was up all night screaming because, best we can guess, she wanted to, and I had to take her down the stairs for something or other. I was tired, sick from my new flu strain and getting sick from bad sushi, so of course I fell down a bunch of stairs with her in my arms. But disaster averted. I missed the last two steps, hit the wall, bounced off the landing and into a fake plant. Molly didn’t notice and neither did I.
Now, that was the bad stuff, which in retrospect made this event all the more memorable and funny. But there was some really good stuff. We had a long hike during the day together in our long forgotten mountains. We enjoyed lunch out in peace and quiet. We bought ourselves a new camera and just simply enjoyed some hours (precious few of them) with each other. Oh, and I ran myself a half-marathon Sunday despite having been sick and under-trained.
It wasn’t the big event I had hoped for, but the simplicity of it will make it one of the best. And the random events the defined it will remind us how much fun normal life can be...
Oh and Katy and Caden had fun making a silly birthday cake for Mommy’s birthday--It turned out to be a Frankenstein type creature which Caden named “EEEEEEEEE”
